Gas used for cooking, lighting, heating and commercial purposes was manufactured at the Hempstead Intersection Street Manufactured Gas Plant from early 1900’s to mid 1950’s. This plant used coal and petroleum products to create a flammable gas which was piped into the surrounding communities. The production and storage facilities were decommissioned and demolished in the early 1950’s. The by-products of gas production and storage that resulted from site operations are now being addressed through Interim Remedial measures and a Remedial Action Plan approved and being implemented by National Grid under the oversight of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The site is owned by National Grid, which is responsible for the investigation and remediation of the site because it was operated by a predecessor company at the time the contamination occurred.
This website provides information on Hempstead Intersection Street former MGP Site, the remediation projects and opportunities for public participation. National Grid is committed to the protection and enhancement of the environment, always seeking ways to minimize the environmental impacts of our past, present and future activities. We hope this website, a part of our public participation and outreach efforts, is helpful and informative. If you need additional information or have suggestions to make our website better, please contact the individuals listed under Contacts.
Updates
National Grid will provide updates about the status of the Hempstead Intersection Street former MGP Site as Operations, Maintenance, and Monitoring (OM&M) progresses. The Updates generally describe work recently completed and upcoming work, especially work that may affect normal community activities. Archives of previous reports as well as the most recent OM&M reports will be found in the Key Documents section of this website.
In addition, any questions pertaining to the site can be posed by calling the project Hotline at (631) 348-6250.
Hempstead Intersection Street Former MGP Site
Update November 2024
Investigation to Improve Site Drainage
National Grid and its contractors are working to improve stormwater drainage at the former MGP site. An investigation of current conditions is underway. The investigation includes installation of monitoring wells followed by collection of groundwater elevation data, specifically during rain events, to model groundwater flow. The data collected will be inputted into groundwater modeling software to assist in determining a remedy to improve site drainage. An existing drainage swale is situated near the western border of the site; the swale will be cleaned out to reduce stormwater runoff offsite while the investigation is underway.
Completed Remediation and OM&M
National Grid completed the major remedial construction work for the Site and the Final Engineering Report (FER) for the remediation work was approved by the NYSDEC in April 2017. National Grid will continue to perform the routine Operations, Monitoring, and Maintenance (OM&M) for the Groundwater Oxygenation treatment systems, and the monitoring wells in accordance with NYSDEC requirements. One Groundwater Oxygenation treatment system has been shut down due to groundwater plume reduction and post-shutdown monitoring is ongoing.
National Grid submits reports of the ongoing OM&M activities to NYSDEC, which can be found in Major Reports, using the Key Documents Tab.
