Construction Progress at the Former Hempstead Manufactured Gas Plant Week Ending 10/17/2008

National Grid’s contractor (Entact Environmental Services) completed the assembly of the temporary enclosure in the vicinity of IRM Excavation Areas B & C (refer to the August 2008 Hempstead Fact Sheet for the location of Areas B & C).

Temporary Enclosure

Vapor Management System

A vapor management system (VMS) was also attached to the enclosure.

Excavation of contaminated soil adjacent to the eastern property line of the former MGP site was completed. A geotextile fabric was installed at the bottom of the excavation and clean imported fill was placed up to the original ground level. Community air monitoring was conducted during the excavation and backfill activities to determine if corrective actions were needed and to ensure that airborne contaminant levels were not produced above regulatory standards.

Soil Backfill in Excavation

Onsite and offsite drilling and sampling activities continued.  This work is being performed to support the design of remedies for offsite contaminated groundwater and for deeper tar impacted soils.

Two Week Outlook:

Contaminated soil from IRM excavation Areas B and C site will be removed under the temporary enclosure and taken offsite for treatment and disposal.  Drilling and sampling activities will continue onsite and offsite.
