Weekly Update, October 20, 2008 – October 24, 2008

Construction Progress at the Former Hempstead Manufactured Gas Plant Week Ending 10/24/2008

Temporary Enclosure
National Grid’s contractor (Entact Environmental Services) began excavation of contaminated soils from IRM Areas B and C (refer to the August 2008 Hempstead Fact Sheet for the location of Areas B & C). The contaminated soils were removed under a temporary enclosure and taken offsite for treatment and disposal. Thirty truck loads of contaminated soil were removed from the site during October 20 to October 24. To date, 54 truck loads (1,174 tons) of contaminated soil have been removed from the site.

Drilling and Sampling Activities
Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities continued.  This work is being performed to support the design of remedies for offsite contaminated groundwater and for deeper tar impacted soils.

Two Week Outlook:

Removal of contaminated soil from IRM excavation Areas B and C will continue.  After these areas are completed, the temporary enclosure will be moved to IRM excavation Area A and contaminated soil will be removed from this area.

Drilling and sampling activities will continue offsite and onsite.
