Weekly Update, October 27, 2008 – October 31, 2008

Construction Progress at the Former Hempstead Manufactured Gas Plant Week Ending 10/31/2008

Temporary Enclosure
National Grid’s contractor (Entact Environmental Services) completed excavation of contaminated soils from IRM Areas B and C (please refer to the site map provided on the Project Description tab). The contaminated soils were removed under a temporary enclosure and taken offsite for treatment and disposal. Clean fill was placed and compacted in each excavation. Fifty truck loads of contaminated soil were removed from the site during October 27 to October 31. To date, 104 truck loads (approximately 2,500 tons) of contaminated soil have been removed from the site.

Drilling and Sampling Activities
National Grid hosted a site meeting this week for local government officials and community members to see the remediation work and associated community air monitoring equipment.

Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities continued. This work is being performed to support the design of remedies for offsite contaminated groundwater and for deeper tar impacted soils.

Two Week Outlook:

The temporary enclosure will be relocated to IRM Area A and contaminated soil will be removed from this area.

Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities will continue.
