Construction Progress at the Former Hempstead Manufactured Gas Plant Week Ending 11/14/08

Contaminated Soil Removal From Area A

National Grid’s contractor (Entact Environmental Services) completed the excavation and removal of contaminated soils and concrete from Area A (please refer to the project description map provided on the description tab). The excavated materials were taken offsite for treatment and disposal. A geotextile fabric was installed at the bottom of the excavation and clean imported soil was used as backfill. To date, 150 truckloads of contaminated soil and approximately 9,500 gallons of contaminated liquid have been removed from the site.

Movement of Temporary Enclosure

After remediation was completed in Area A, the temporary enclosure was relocated to IRM Area E and the vapor management system was attached.

Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities continued. This work is being performed to support the design of remedies for offsite contaminated groundwater and for deeper tar impacted soils.

Drilling and Sampling Activities

Two Week Outlook:

Contaminated soils from Area E will be excavated and transported offsite for treatment and disposal. Imported clean soils will be backfilled in the excavation and compacted.

Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities will continue.
