Construction Progress at the Former Hempstead Manufactured Gas Plant Week Ending 11/21/08

Temporary Enclosure at Area E

National Grid’s contractor (Entact Environmental Services) excavated contaminated soils from the northern end of Area E (please refer to the project description map provided on the description tab). The excavated soils were taken offsite for treatment and disposal. A geotextile fabric was installed at the bottom of the excavation and clean imported soil was used as backfill. To date, 222 truckloads of contaminated soil and approximately 9,500 gallons of contaminated liquid have been removed from the site.

The temporary enclosure was moved south along Area E in preparation for further removal of contaminated soils.

Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities continued. This work is being performed to support the design of remedies for offsite contaminated groundwater and for deeper tar impacted soils.

Drilling and Sampling Activities

Two Week Outlook:

Work will be suspended over the four day Thanksgiving weekend (November 27 - 30) and will resume on Monday December 1.

The excavation of contaminated soils at Area E will be completed and the entire area will be backfilled with clean soils and stone.  The temporary enclosure will then be disassembled for movement offsite.  A permanent fence will be installed on the north side of the site.

Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities will continue.
