Construction Progress at the Former Hempstead Manufactured Gas Plant Week Ending 12/05/08
Disassembly of Temporary Enclosure |
National Grid’s contractor (Entact Environmental Services) completed the excavation and removal of contaminated soils under the temporary enclosure in Area E (please refer to the project description map provided on the description tab). The contaminated soils were taken offsite for treatment and disposal. A geotextile fabric was installed at the bottom of the excavated area and clean imported soil was used as backfill. To date, 290 truckloads of contaminated soil and approximately 9,500 gallons of contaminated liquid have been removed from the site. All excavation activities have been completed.
Surface Grading in Area E |
The temporary enclosure is being dismantled and prepared for removal from the site.
The site is currently being prepared for the permanent ground cover, which will consist of crushed stone placed in the northern portion of the site.
Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities continued. This work is being performed to support the design of remedies for offsite contaminated groundwater and for deeper tar impacted soils that are located onsite and offsite.
Drilling and Sampling Activities |
Two Week Outlook:
Crushed stone fill will be placed at ground surface and erosion and sedimentation controls from this phase of the remediation project will be removed. Contractor owned construction equipment and supplies will be removed from the site. Offsite and onsite drilling and sampling activities will continue.
