Hempstead O2 System #1 Handout 10 25 10 with map.pdf
Update for April 2011
As of April 2011, National Grid has completed the installation of groundwater Oxygenation System #1, located along Smith Street, the LIRR right-of-way, Atlantic Ave. and Hilton Ave. This system is expected to be operational in May 2011, after completing system startup. The system will treat the groundwater plume associated with the Hempstead former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Site by accelerating the rate of natural bioremediation within the groundwater plume. Oxygenation System #2 was completed previously, in the Fall of 2010, and is operating as designed. Please use the link above to see the figure showing the location of the treatment systems. Restoration work related to the installation of the system is progressing and all of the concrete sidewalk repairs have been completed. Asphalt restoration was also completed in April, and final restoration work in the LIRR right-of-way area will be completed after LIPA completes its ongoing electric line and pole upgrade project.
National Grid is working on the procurement process for obtaining a contractor for remediating the residual MGP materials located at the former site itself, and under the parking lot immediately to the south of the MGP Site. This is the largest phase of the remediation project, and will use solidification with cement and other additives to encapsulate the MGP residuals in the soil in these areas. After the bidding process is completed, work is expected to commence late in the Summer of 2011.
Should you have any questions or concerns about the work, please use National Grid’s Hempstead MGP Site Project Hotline at 516 545 6161. Additional information about the investigation and remediation of the Hempstead Intersection Street former MGP Site is also available on the Key Documents tab of this website.
Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to make progress addressing the environmental issues associated with the Hempstead former Manufactured Gas Plant Site.
