National Grid’s contractor (Entact LLC) started mobilizing for the In-Situ Solidification remediation phase for the Hempstead former Manufactured Gas Plant site on October 3, 2011. The latest site activities have included the delivery and set up/assembly of the temporary containment building and vapor treatment system. Installation of the main site power transformer and wiring have been finalized,
survey and layout of the initial phase of remediation work limits have been completed and will continue throughout the course of remediation as work progresses. Delivery and installation of the community air monitoring equipment was completed and implementation of the Community Air Monitoring Program began. Soil excavation will begin inside of the temporary containment building the week of December 5th. Excavation and trucking will incrementally increase throughout the next 2 weeks.
All of this work is intended to help to safely complete the remediation phase of the Remedial Action Plan.
A Fact Sheet summarizing the project and its potential impacts to the residents was sent to the community to summarize the work. The Fact Sheet and the finalized Remedial Action Work Plan can also be found in the Key Documents/Major Reports section of this website. A link to the Fact Sheet can be found below.
As work proceeds, the web site will be updated periodically to ensure the community is informed of the project progress and schedule.
